چکیده

Abstract The friction and wear properties, as well the scuffing resistance, of different piston-ring coatings mating with a chrome-plated cylinder liner were investigated. Interrupted tests under lubricant starvation condition conducted to examine behavior Cr-diamond coating (GDC) diamond-like (DLC). results indicated that DLC had outstanding tribological properties (small coefficient loss) at 150 °C, while GDC exhibited better performance an elevated temperature (240 °C). resistance; no material adhesion occurred for 70 min unlubricated condition. interrupted behaviors revealed process involved consumption oil relatively stable wear, reduction in force, occurrence scuffing, sequence. In contrast, although force also increased after short period weak friction, was observed. This is attributed formation mixed oxide graphitic C tribolayer.

An Improved Lubrication Model between Piston Rings and Cylinder Liners with Consideration of Liner Dynamic Deformations

The friction pair of piston rings and cylinder liner is one of the most important friction couplings in an internal combustion engine. It influences engine efficiency and service life. Under the excitation of piston slaps, the dynamic deformation of cylinder liner is close to the surface roughness magnitudes, which can affect the friction and lubrication performance between the piston rings and...

Cavitation induced starvation for piston-ring/liner tribological conjunction

The study investigates the mechanism of ring-liner lubrication in the vicinity of the top and bottom dead centres of an internal combustion engine. Predicting lubricant transient behaviour is critical when the inlet reversal leads to thin films and inherent metal-to-metal interaction. It was found that the cavitation, which is located at the trailing edge of the contact before reversal, briefly...

Experimental study of piston scuffing effect on engine performance parameters

Piston scuffing is one of the destructive faults in internal combustion (IC) engines. There are different causes to make this fault that lack of lubricant is the most important one among them. The purpose of this paper is the quantitative study of the piston scuffing effects on the engine performance parameters which is a new research direction in the IC engine filed. For this reason, several e...

Propagation of Uncertainty in Optimal Design of Multilevel Systems: Piston-Ring/Cylinder-Liner Case Study

This paper proposes an approach for optimal design of multilevel systems under uncertainty. The approach utilizes the stochastic extension of the analytical target cascading formulation. The reliability of satisfying the probabilistic constraints is computed by means of the most probable point method using the hybrid mean value algorithm. A linearization technique is employed for estimating the...

Comparison of Heavy-Duty Scuffing Behavior between Chromium-Based Ceramic Composite and Nickel-Chromium-Molybdenum-Coated Ring Sliding against Cast Iron Liner under Starvation

A running-in and starved lubrication experiment is designed to investigate the heavy-duty scuffing behavior of piston ring coatings against cast iron (Fe) cylinder liner using the piston ring reciprocating liner test rig. The scuffing resistance of the piston ring with the chromium-based ceramic composite coating (CKS), and that with the thermally sprayed nickel-chromium-molybdenum coating (NCM...
